NAIROBI –  KENYA’S largest mobile network operator, Safaricom, has reduced roaming rates for its customers travelling to the region.

Safaricom Chief Executive Officer, Bob Collymore, said the subscribers would receive calls for free in Uganda while those that making calls to any East African countries would pay a mere flat rate of Sh10.

He said Safaricom’s adoption of one network area initiative, which helped secure partnerships with Uganda’s leading mobile networks, prompted the discounts.

“We remain committed to identifying more opportunities to lower roaming rates for more countries in the region,” said Collymore,

He said Uganda cell phone companies partnering Safaricom in this roaming exercise comprised Airtel, MTN, UTL and Orange.

Collymore said before this initiative, making a phone call outside Kenya to fellow east African countries would cost a whopping Sh215 per minute but due to the latest initiative, such a call now costs Sh10.

The low rates would apply in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
