prof. umar garba danbattaABUJA, (CAJ News) – THE Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has  insisted on creating a level playing field for all stakeholders in the industry.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta  stated this at a Consultative Forum on The Draft Regulatory Framework for  the Provision of Value Added Services (VAS) in Nigeria, held in Lagos.

Danbatta said this would promote ICT innovation locally, increase investment in youth, and enhance Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as  well as providing access to optimize and affordable broadband services in the country.

He noted that it was important to develop and encourage quality local content in Nigeria by rewarding content developers who are major players  in the VAS segment of the industry.

“When finished, the regulatory framework will compliment the Nigerian  Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and respective licences issued by the Commission in providing guiding principles, standards and protocols for
Value Added Services operating in the industry,” Danbatta said.

The Executive Vice Chairman added that the forum was part of the  commission’s rule-making process and its guiding principle of carrying out  representative and wide consultations in the development of regulatory instruments as stipulated by the NCA.
