Mobile app to address Ekurhuleni service delivery issues

JOHANNESBURG – THE Ekurhuleni Municipality in Gauteng is set to efficiently and effectively manage service delivery issues faced by citizens thanks to the launch of a Smart Citizen mobile application in partnership with Vodacom.

Called “My Ekurhuleni App”, it enables the municipality make the most of technology to technology to promote active citizenry communication.

It will allow citizens to communicate challenges related to service delivery in their communities and provide the municipality with a real-time two-way communication engagement platform with the public to report and resolve issues from water to sanitation.

Through this app citizens across municipality will now be able to use their mobile devices to report service delivery issues via a USSD (*134*674#) option for feature phones and through a mobile app for smartphones.

Nhlanhla Nciza, a musician and one of the local ambassadors, expressed excitement at the launch of the My Ekurhuleni App.

“It’s an amazing app, it’s innovative and truly one-of-a-kind,” Nciza said.

She pointed out residents usually complained authorities did not respond timely to service delivery complaints.

“Now we’ve got the opportunity to launch a complaint on the app and get an immediate response. I believe that this is something that will really help to make service delivery quicker,” Nciza said.

Dinah Kheswa, Managing Executive for Vodacom Business Public Sector, said the company was utilising mobile technology to bring about administrative efficiency and enhance communication between government and citizens in an effort to support service delivery.

The initiative was initially introduced in the Eastern Cape, where Kheswa said it was making a real difference in service delivery.

“We are confident that it will be similarly well received in Ekurhuleni,”
she said.

Kheswa said the mobile app would provide transparency and accountability in governance.

“As a corporate citizen, Vodacom is responsible for helping government deliver services as efficiently as possible and we are excited to see the positive change which the solutions will bring to communities,” she concluded.
