Firms expand regional broadband connectivity
LAGOS – SOME leading technology companies are involved in discussions poised to deepen broadband penetration in the Central African region.
Nigeria’s MainOne, leading Communications Services Company in West Africa , and Cameroon Telecommunications Corporation (CAMTEL), the national telecommunications and Internet service provider in Cameroon, confirmed this would culminate in a Joint Venture Agreement.
This announcement builds on the long-standing relationship between the two companies and Huawei Marine Networks, and the success of the roll-out of the submarine cable network extension from Nigeria to Cameroon and other parts of the region.
Speaking during its courtesy visit to MainOne’s Lagos offices, CAMTEL’s Director General, David Nkoto Emane, highlighted the company’s expansion efforts to boost Cameroon’s low broadband penetration.
He stressed the company’s poise to emerge Central Africa’s major bandwidth hub and internationally to Europe and beyond.
MainOne’s Chief Executive Officer, Funke Opeke, reiterated the company’s vision for a connected West Africa.
She said MainOne supported initiatives to expedite the penetration of reliable and affordable broadband internet services in the West African region, aimed at increased economic development and business growth.
“We have, and will continue to invest significantly in attempts to induce accelerated broadband access, which is part of our strategy to boost the economic and commercial development of West Africa,” Opeke said.
