NCC bridges ICT gender divide

NCCABUJA, (CAJ News) – THE Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has  pledged its commitment to providing an enabling environment for women to  rise to leadership positions in the sector.

Director of the Public Affairs Tony Ojobo stated this at the 2016  International Girls in ICT (information and communications technology) Day  organised byE-Business Life Communication Limited in Lagos.

The day is commemorated yearly on April 28.

“The Nigerian telecom industry is not only gender sensitive but have provided the enabling environment that has enabled women to rise to the  topmost echelon of leadership in the ICT sector,” Ojobo said.

He added that the commission’s Digital Access Programme (DAP) provided  computers and internet access to secondary and vocational schools.

“While this support is not provided for girls schools alone, the idea is  to enable students, including women to embrace the digital world as early  as the secondary school stage,” Ojobo added.

The International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative backed by all International Telecommunications Union member states.

It aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of ICT.
