Foundations address congestion at Kenya schools
NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – AFTER 31years of pupils studying in temporary structures, the Shashafey Primary School in Mandera East Constituency in Kenya has received a major boost following a donation of a fully furnished early childhood development (ECD) classroom.
The school has become the latest beneficiary of the Through the Know and Grow Project, a partnership between Safaricom Foundation, Tinga Tinga Tales Foundation and the Coca-Cola Company.
The school benefited from an 80 capacity classroom.
Safaricom Foundation Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Judy Mwangi, says the Foundation has taken a particular interest in Shashafey due to the many challenges it faces.
“Our main focus here is on children from marginalized areas. Together with our partners, we have constructed classrooms to help reduce the number of children in each class to ease learning,” she says.
Tinga Tinga Tales Board Chairman, Eric Wainaina, notes there were more children than classes, adding that the additional space will help improve learning in the school.
Shashafey headmaster, Ahmed Abdille, says the new classroom will ease congestion.
The second phase of the project will involve the implementation of water harvesting and sanitation facilities.
