Smartcard partnership drives Vision 2030

Mastercard and HudumaNAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYA’S Vision 2030 to reform public services to enhance accountability, transparency and efficient service delivery as well as developing a cashless economy has received a major boost following a smartcard partnership between Mastercard and Huduma.
It is envisaged the Huduma card would connect all citizens to the formal financial sector and address the movement from place to place by Kenyans in search of services from the government.
Huduma Kenya aims to transform public service delivery by providing citizens access to various public services and information from several channels such as one stop shop citizen service centers called Huduma Centre.
The Huduma card is a prepaid chip and PIN technology to connect all Kenyans to the formal financial sector by providing a secure, reliable and flexible payment option.
Bank of Africa, Diamond Trust Bank, Equity Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank are issuing the Huduma Card, powered by Mastercard, with no charges being allocated to citizens when registering for the smartcard.
Dennis Mutuku, Chief Executive Officer of Huduma Kenya Secretariat, said the initiative would address financial exclusion.
“This is Kenya’s first multipurpose social payment card with payment functionality and we are excited to see the instant, substantial and positive impact that this will have on the lives of millions of citizens previously excluded from the financial mainstream,” said Mutuku.
Kenyans will be able to pay for an array of government services such hospital insurance and social security fund with the smart prepaid card.
Daniel Monehin, Division President for Sub-Saharan Africa, Mastercard, said the company was committed to extending financial inclusion for the unbanked and under-banked in Kenya.
“Innovation is central to achieving our vision of a world beyond cash in Kenya and across the continent,” said Monehin.
