Norway funds revival of Nigeria ICT facilities

Emergency Telecommunications SectorMAIDUGURI – THE Emergency Telecommunications Sector (ETS) has secured US$3,8 million for the deployment of vital communications services to aid humanitarian efforts northeast Nigeria.
Officials confirmed an undisclosed among donated by Norway but disclosed the funding request of $4,8 million had been secured.
“The ETS received a new contribution from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and it is now 79 percent funded,” said an official.
ETC is a global network of organizations that work together to provide shared communications services in humanitarian emergencies.
In Nigeria, the Boko Haram conflict has destroyed communications infrastructure, which impacts on responses to emergencies.
ETS said among latest setbacks to the deployment of infrastructure was the heavy rains pummelling northeast Nigeria.
The organisation appealed for the remaining $1 million it requested to enable it deliver communications services to the humanitarian community in northeast Nigeria until the end of 2017.
