‘Eswatini probes gaming firm over ‘illegal” launch

from SAMBULO DLAMINI in Mbabane, Eswatini
MBABANE – THE Gaming Control Board of Eswatini is clamping down on a gambling firm it alleged has illegally launched a betting website in the country.

The board stated the company under scrutiny, 8Bet, had not acquired authorisation before launching the site, which by the time of publication was active.

It offers betting in all major sports.

The board has also warned the public that by betting with 8Bet, they would also be in contravention of the Kingdom nation’s laws.

Members of the public would be in contravention of the Section 3 (1) (a) of the Gaming Control Act, 2002.

It reads, “A person shall not engage in any gaming or any event or contingency other than with a holder of a licence who is permitted under licence to engage in gaming on the event or contingency concerned.”

“In exercise of its powers, the Gaming Control Board therefore, warns the public against engaging in any gaming activity with 8Bet,” the board stated.

“In the meantime, the Board is taking urgent remedial action to avert such state of affairs and will continue to identify and work with all involved to get into (sic) the bottom of such patently untenable state of affairs.”

Like in most of Africa, betting on sports is a popular activity in the former Swaziland.

It attracts tourists and local punters.
